This summer, we experienced a whirlwind of big moments and unforgettable memories. Our trip to Southern California started with moving our son into Biola University, included our first-ever cruise, and wrapped up with a night on the historic Queen Mary.
It was emotional and exciting all at once—watching our son take his first big step into college life while sneaking in a little vacation time for ourselves. Here’s a quick look at the highlights from our week:
Dropping Off Our Son at Biola University
- Ethan arrived early for Torrey Honors College orientation, which means we moved him in a week before other students.
- Flying to college with large checked moving bags and a few boxes shipped ahead made move-in easier.
- Biola hosted great family orientation events where we met professors and other parents.
Within days, Ethan made friends, learned his way around campus, and told us he felt like this was exactly where God wanted him to be.
First-Ever Cruise to Catalina Island and Ensenada

- After dropping Ethan off for his orientation, the rest of our family went on our first ever cruise.
- We booked a four-night Royal Caribbean cruise that went along the California coast to Catalina Island and Ensenada.
- We explored Catalina Island’s interior on a Conservancy tour and saw wild bison.
- In Ensenada, we shopped the market stalls before heading back to the ship to enjoy a quiet pool deck.
It was my first cruise, and even without much planning, it turned out to be relaxing, fun, and just what we needed.
Staying Overnight on the Queen Mary

- After the cruise, we had one extra day in Long Beach before flying home.
- We stayed overnight on the historic Queen Mary, explored the decks, and enjoyed the World War II exhibits, including a replica Winston Churchill bunker.
The ship’s history, harbor views, and calm atmosphere made it a unique and memorable way to end our trip.
Looking Back
This trip was more than just a college drop-off – it was a milestone for our whole family. We got to help Ethan start this new chapter of his life while carving out time to reconnect, relax, and make memories of our own.
