Issue
I kept waking up feeling achy and with a sore back. Ah the good old days of being able to sleep on anything (floor, couch, lumpy mattress) and wake up feeling fine. But after consistently feeling crummy in the morning, we decided we might need a new mattress. We couldn’t even remember when we had gotten our mattress. 10 years ago? 15? How long do mattresses last?
Last time we went mattress shopping it took hours of laying on different beds and trying not to get up-sold to the most expensive model. We didn’t want to go through that again (who has a whole day to devote to trying out mattresses?), so we kept putting off getting a mattress.
Researching mattresses
After a particularly sore back, I started researching mattresses online. I compared a ton of different mattress styles and brands. I reached out to friends and family to ask for their recommendations. There are a lot of great brands and mattresses out there, but what stood out to me was the classic memory foam mattress by Nectar. Getting rid of our old mattress
The hardest part about getting a new mattress was getting rid of the old one. After ordering our new Nectar mattress, we started researching how to get rid of our old one. If your mattress is in good or decent condition, you can donate to various organizations. Unfortunately, our mattress was very lumpy and in poor condition. We had to contact our garbage service and set up a time for them to pick it up.
Luckily my son can help move furniture now. One of my least favorite things is moving mattresses/boxes/furniture. As we moved our mattress downstairs, all I could envision was this. (At least our mattress actually fit – unlike the sofa in Friends).
Setting up the new mattress
Depending on your bed, you may or may not need a boxspring. We have a platform bed, so we did not get a boxspring.
Setting up the new mattress was great. It took a few weeks to ship (but it was free shipping, so I didn’t mind waiting). It shipped in a box to the front door.
Set up your mattress at least 4 hours before you want to use it. It will start expanding to its full size and should be able to sleep on within 4 hours (and will be final shape within 48 hours).
Follow the instructions included with your mattress – it comes enclosed in a plastic covering that you will remove.
Off-gassing – Nectar’s foams are CertiPUR-US certified. There was a slight smell when we first removed the mattress from it’s plastic packaging, but it didn’t last long.
Conclusion
We have had our new Nectar mattress for over a month now. From night one I slept great! No more waking up achy and with a sore back. I’m so happy we decided to finally get a new mattress and this one checked every box on our list. I am kicking myself that we didn’t do this sooner.
