The Balanced Life Assessment tool has you rate yourself in 6 different areas of your life to see how satisfied you are. Spirituality is one piece of it, but itβs a very important piece.
What does spirituality mean to you? For me it means that I am seeking God, serving others, and giving well. What is your relationship with God? What does it mean to feel balanced in the area of spirituality? Here are some areas to consider:
- Mindfulness
- Being fully present where you are and who you are with.
- Not worrying or focusing on the past or the future, but being aware of right now and enjoying this moment.
- Prayer
- Communication with God. Can be aloud, silent, written, sung, by yourself, with a group.
- Bible Study
- Reading/memorizing the Word.
- Studying the Bible to learn about God and feel closer to Him.
- God-Given Purpose
- We are all different and have unique gifts and talents. What are you good at? What are you passionate about? When do you feel closest to God? What are you doing? Where are you? Who are you with? By thinking about these questions, you can start to find your God-given purpose.
- Service
- When you give time, or treasure or talents, what quickens your heart? Is it sharing the Gospel? Hunger? Poverty? Missions? Homelessness? Orphans? Disasters? What makes you excited to help?
- Giving
- You know the old saying “it is better to give than to receive.” I find this to be true – giving to others can make you feel happier and more fulfilled. By giving and helping others, it can give you perspective and show what really matters in life.
- Where is your charitable giving going to? How much of your monthly income do you give away? What non-profit excites you and your household? Our family chooses to support our local church, World Vision, Family Promise, single mothers and other causes as we feel led.
Action Steps
If your life is feeling out of balance, and you want to increase your satisfaction in the area of spirituality, here are some sample action steps/goals you can take.
- Join a bible study
- I love bible studies with others because it keeps me accountable to read and study, gives me new insight and perspectives from others, and builds community with others.
- Join a bible study through your church.
- Find a few friends and choose a study to go through together.
- Join an on-line bible study.
- I love bible studies with others because it keeps me accountable to read and study, gives me new insight and perspectives from others, and builds community with others.
- Meditate
- The world is chaotic and confusing. By taking time to meditate, you are quieting your mind and focusing on God’s word.
- Meditation is usually defined as emptying the mind and relaxing the body. Christian meditation is concentrating and thinking deeply on God’s truth.
- If you aren’t sure where to start with meditation, there are apps that can help guide you through meditation and deep breathing, such as the Abide – Christian Meditation app.
- Work on being more mindful
- Put devices away and sit around the dinner table with your family and have real conversations. Focus on the here and now and enjoy the moment, instead of being distracted by to-do lists and phones dinging.
- Service
- Look for service opportunities that interest you and your gifts. Love to cook? Bring a meal to someone in need. Love kids? Volunteer to help with the local youth group.
- Find something your family can do together to serve others.
This list is just a few ideas of things you could try if you are wanting to feel more balanced in your life. What are some things you do in your life that help you feel grounded and balanced? I would love to hear in the comments.
